PHILLIP TOLEDANO. ANOTHER AMERICA

Tallulah Studio Art, in collaboration with Fabbrica Eos, is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Milan of Phillip Toledano, Another America. Born in 1968, Toledano, a Londoner by birth and a New Yorker by adoption, is recognized as one of the most innovative and appreciated visual artists on the international scene. With nine projects to his credit, including When I Was Six, Days With My Father – a manifesto of love for his father – and Another Kind Of Beauty, in the project collected in the book Another America, published by L’Artiere in 2024, the artist challenges the traditional perception of photography as a means of truth, through images generated by artificial intelligence, accompanied by stories by writer John Keeney.

The setting of Toledano’s works recalls the imaginary of the United States in the 1940s and 1950s, because the photography of that era was the language of truth, of Robert Capa’s photojournalism and the great masters of photography. The images on display present bizarre and absurd situations: from cigarettes that exhale from the back of the head, to heads that catch fire, to flying jellyfish created by pollution in the metropolis, to animals that care for orphans on the streets of New York. These representations, although familiar, destabilize the perception of reality.

As the artist states: “The arrival of artificial intelligence has had the consequence that every lie can now have a convincing visual proof”, highlighting the thin line between reality and fiction and demonstrating the power of photography to influence collective memory.

“The book opens with a reflection on truth in America: ‘Truth in America has been slowly dying over the past decade’, describing a country consumed by conspiracy theories, where facts and history have become personal choices. With artificial intelligence, it is possible to create visual evidence to support any theory, turning lies into something seemingly real. For millions of people, facts are a choice. The arrival of Artificial Intelligence is the next phase in the disappearance of truth. We can recreate the world as it has never been. For every conspiracy theory, there can be visual evidence. Another America takes this idea and creates a story that never existed. Did it really happen? Is this the true story? The images are both familiar and strange, just like the world we live in.”

“I created a small series on the idea ‘What if Donald Trump was born as a middle-class person in New York, how would his life be?’ This opened my eyes to the ability of Artificial Intelligence to recreate and reinvent history, which culturally is where we are in the United States at this moment.”
Text from Rebecca Delmenico’s interview with Phillip Toledano,

The artist defines his work as a form of historical surrealism, using artificial intelligence to reimagine history in a way that makes us question what is real. Creating an alternative story of America through plausible images set in the 1940s is one of the ways he explores this theme. Looking to the future, Toledano reflects on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in art and photography. Just as the advent of photography in the 19th century represented a new frontier that some artists were able to exploit with mastery, AI also represents a new frontier. The artist wonders how photography might evolve in response to AI’s capabilities, suggesting that we might witness an artistic movement similar to Impressionism, born as a response to photographic realism.

Phillip Toledano’s “Another America” offers a provocative glimpse into how Artificial Intelligence can transform our understanding of history and visual truth. His work invites us to reflect on how technology is redefining the boundaries between reality and fiction, raising new questions about the future of art and visual culture.

Tallulah Studio Art

Founded in 1999 by Patrizia Madau, a visionary and sensitive mind attuned to the evolution of visual language, Tallulah Studio Art is a project that combines creativity and consultancy in the worlds of art, design, and photography. For over twenty years, the studio’s focus has been on discovering emerging talents, with a constant attention to new generations and experimental languages. Form, matter, and critical thinking intertwine to create a dynamic and profoundly contemporary curatorial proposal. Tallulah Studio Art’s strength lies in its continuous aesthetic evolution, capable of adapting to global trends while maintaining a genuine vision. Each project is the result of careful study and open dialogue with the present, where creative intuition blends with ethical commitment.
Actively engaged in promoting diversity, inclusion, and respect, the studio has collaborated with Arcus Pride Art – Clifford Chance in support of Casa Arcobaleno Milano. More recently, it has initiated a synergy with Fondazione TOG, integrating art and care in an innovative path dedicated to well-being through creativity.
Tallulah Studio Art’s online platform hosts a curated selection of contemporary art and photography, with a section dedicated to emerging photographic research. Patrizia Madau actively promotes cultural exchange between Italian and international artists, supporting their growth through exhibitions, fairs, events, and talks.
Since 1999, Tallulah Studio Art has curated and promoted numerous artistic events, including:

Fabbrica EOS

Fabbrica Eos was founded in Milan in the early 1990s. After his experience at a renowned gallery in Milan, Giancarlo Pedrazzini embarked on an independent path with the intention of promoting emerging artists, guided by the instinctual theory of the importance of “encounters” and the conviction that art reaches maturity thanks to the complicity and exchange between the gallerist and the artist. The gallery does not follow a dogmatic line in searching for new artists, but rather an idea: “Art is 5 minutes ahead of now.” This concept was also alluded to by “20 years or 5 minutes,” the title of some exhibitions in 2013 with which the gallery celebrated two decades of activity: the exhibitions presented works, both old and new, by all the artists discovered over time, suggesting reflections and cross-readings on the evolution of the various paths. Fabbrica Eos has indeed had the pleasure of opening the exhibition curriculum of numerous artists still active in the contemporary art scene. Since its inception, it has distinguished itself for its attention to emerging artists.

The artist

Phillip Toledano

Toledano refers to his style as ‘historical surrealism’, a reflection on the fluidity of truth in a world that is increasingly dominated by subjective narratives. Evoking the iconography of the US in the 1940s and 1950s, his photographs mix familiarity and dissonance to explore the role of technology in redefining collective memory. The photographs and thought-provoking text create a multi-sensory dialogue that challenges the viewer to question the images. The British artist constructs a world that is both realistic and deeply surreal using AI. In an age marked by conspiracy theories and alternative narratives, Phillip Toledano invites the audience to reflect on the risks and opportunities o@ered by artificial intelligence in creating new realities. Where facts are just tools to be interpreted, this is an exciting new era for how truth is presented. The book opens with a crucial sentence: ‘Truth in America has been slowly dying over the last decade’. This insight underscores the central theme of Toledano’s work: the ability to recreate the world as it has never been before. Reflecting the paradox of our time, his frameworks, though familiar, are inherently dissonant. We are left with profound and disturbing questions: did it really happen? What is true? The artist acknowledges that the interaction with AI o@ers a unique perspective on contemporary storytelling. Artificial intelligence’s appeal is precisely in being able to alter perceptions of truth, revealing a new way of shaping and reinterpreting history.
