THE SOLO EXHIBITION OF
DINA GOLDSTEIN – AN ARTIST BETWEEN FAIRY TALE AND REALITY
Photographic project curated by Patrizia Madau
Tallulah Studio Art, in collaboration with Fabbrica Eos, presents the solo exhibition of Dina Goldstein, the Israeli Canadian contemporary visual artist based in Vancouver, invites us to reflect on the beauty and irony of life through her photographic eye. Born in Tel Aviv in 1969, Dina Goldstein has forged a path that has left its mark on the contemporary art scene, distinguished by works that combine pop surrealism with profound social criticism.
The exhibition presents a selection of her most famous projects, including In the Dollhouse, in which Dina Goldstein explores themes of beauty, power and sexuality through the iconic images of Ken and Barbie. These two dolls, symbols of perfection and unrealistic aspirations, become the protagonists of scenarios that challenge our perceptions of real life. Dina Goldstein manages to twist the idea of perfect happiness to show us that even the brightest figures can hide shadows and dissatisfaction.
Dina Goldstein’s creative genius explodes even more boldly with Fallen Princesses, a project in which the artist reinterprets the princess friends of our childhood dreams and presents them in contexts that challenge the traditional fairy tale narrative. The Disney princesses, often shrouded in their aura of enchantment and serenity, are captured in raw and real moments that force us to confront the difficulties of life. His ironic and provocative vision conveys a powerful message: fairy tales do not always have a happy ending.
The Gods of Suburbia series offers a profound analysis of the role of religion and faith in the contemporary world, while in Last Supper, East Vancouver, Goldstein takes inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting to recreate The Last Supper in a modern, urban context. This reinterpretation not only pays homage to an artistic masterpiece but also leads us to reflect on contemporary social dynamics and places of marginality, such as Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where stories of redemption and fall intertwine.
Dina Goldstein is a unique and powerful voice on the contemporary art scene. With her engaging approach, she challenges us to look beyond the surface of images and reflect on complex issues affecting our society. Each image is an invitation to explore not only beauty, but also the everyday challenges we all face. A truly visionary artist, capable of transforming the common perception of reality into a living work of art. Her work has been recognised by major awards, including the Arte Laguna Special Prize in 2012 and the Grand Prize of the Prix Virginia in 2014.
The exhibition is co-organised with Fabbrica Eos Arte Contemporanea.
Fabbrica Eos
Fabbrica Eos was founded in Milan in the 1990s. Giancarlo Pedrazzini, the founder and current director, set out on his own after his experience in an important Milanese gallery, with the intention of promoting young artists from the outset, guided above all by the instinctive theory of the “importance of the encounter” and the conviction that art reaches a mature stage thanks to the complicity and exchange between gallery owner and artist. Indeed, Fabbrica Eos has the pleasure of opening the exhibition curriculum of numerous artists still active on the contemporary art scene. In 2019, it will open its new space in Milan, in one of the city’s fastest-growing districts. The new space will be inaugurated with an important event, the exhibition of Mimmo Rotella, in collaboration with the renowned critic of Nouveau Réalisme, Pierre Restany, preceded by a performance in which the master Rotella and the gallerist will tear posters from walls and billboards all over Milan. Numerous solo exhibitions followed, the first by artists who are still very active today, including Robert Gligorov, Giovanni Sesia, Enzo Fiore, Corrado Levi, Fabio Internazionale d’arte di Venezia (2011).
The promotion of “young” artists continues through the organisation of exhibitions in its own premises, the publication of catalogues, participation in fairs and the use of IT, but also thanks to the creation and consolidation of a circuit of collaborations with galleries, institutions, companies and cultural and sports associations, which allows the artists supported to achieve maximum visibility. These include the initiatives undertaken since 2009 with the Rovedine Golf Club, which has been transformed into a Sculpture Park thanks to the installation of works all over the course and the sponsorship of themed sports competitions (sculpture, music, painting).

Dina Goldstein
DINA GOLDSTEIN – is known internationally for her photographic series, developed into elaborate tableaux, in which the artist, with a pop and irreverent language, moves a social critique by showing her own version of the archetypes of western mass culture. The biting works of Goldstein address change from different aspects. “In the Dollhouse” series, the artist uncovers through an ironic and edgy narrative the dark sides of the toxic dynamic of a couple’s relationship, that of Barbie and Ken, characterised by appearance and pretence. With “The Fallen Princess,” on the other hand, Goldstein demolishes the false myth of ‘they lived happily ever after’, created by Disney for the use and consumption of entire generations by recontextualising the heroines to raise awareness of the challenges of contemporary society. With ‘The Last Supper’ from the ‘God of Suburbia’ series, the change that society should have towards people in need is addressed. In her reconstruction of the religious history’s most famous dinner, the artist depicts Jesus’ apostles as belonging to a gang of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside – a place known to be among the most infamous and deprived in Canada. Instead of a banquet, we find empty beer cans and soup in plastic bowls.
